For the second year in a row, the South Boys’ team provided a nail biter for another sold out crowd of 650 fans attending the 23^rd Annual Redding Breakfast Lion’s Club All Star Basketball Game held Sunday at Simpson University.

With the score tied at 85 with 50 seconds left, the North team failed to take the lead on two missed free throws.  Thirty seconds later, Brandon Hoag from Corning drove the lane and scored the winning basket to clench the 87-85 win for Corning Union coach Kurt Wilkins South team. Last year’s South team also managed to squeak out a one point 106-105 win in the final seconds.

The North team, coached by Josh Hamilton from Trinity High, led 49-35 at half time.  Their second half shooting accuracy however dropped from 43% down to 28% while the South team managed to converta respectable 42% for their game winning effort.  The South also managed to hit 5 three pointers during the second half while the North could only capitalize on one.  The South team had a well- balanced scoring attack with all but three members of the team in the scoring column.

North All-Star Marcus Williamson from Trinity High led all scoring with 16 points while Brandon Hoag of Corning Union led the South with 13.  Noah Zoppi from Corning was named MVP for the game winning South team.

In the Girl’s game, The South All Stars garnered a solid win by finishing with 85 points compared to the North’s 59.  Although the game was tied at half-time at 36, a cold second half of shooting by the North team could only muster 23 points compared to the South’s 49. South Coach Mark Stephens of U-Prep fielded a well-rounded offensive attack with six of his players scoring eight or more points towards the win. Madison Corder of Fall River led the winning effort with 11 points.Corder also led her team in rebounding with 9.

The North team, under the direction of Nathan Emerson from Central Valley, was plagued with turnovers and an inconsistent scoring offense.  Cate Walton from Shasta High provided the bulk of their scoring with a game high of 18.  No other North player hit double figures.  Walton was named MVP with her stellar performance. Walton plans on attending Azusa Pacific next fall on a Merit Scholarship.

The Redding Breakfast Club would like to thank the coaches and players for their outstanding seasons and earning a spot on the prestigious All-Star teams.  Twenty-six schools from around the North state were represented by the 60-player roster.

The club would also like to acknowledge all of the many sponsors who help put the game on, especially Simpson University for the use of their facilities.
