Remembering Lion Charlie Duncan

Written by Mary Stephenson March 24, 2022

One of Redding Breakfast Lions Club’s oldest members, Lion Charlie Duncan is no longer with us.  As each one had the floor this morning there were some very fond memories shared. All depicting his character of kindness and the laughs he provided.

I always got a kick out of his years of experience. I tried to write it down one day, but didn’t get my pen out fast enough. Maybe he was 150 years old. Just kidding, but he definitely lived a very busy life.

We were also honored to have District Governor Lion Karen Crook visit. Reminding us all about the Lion Convention on April 8th, 9th, and 10th.

Lion Egon gave us some of his childhood history and as a young man going to Canada (my homeland).

After 2 years of being absent Lion Gary and I decided to return to our Lion friends. Happy to see that Lion Ray Tickner also returned. Where would we be without his interjections of laughter into our morning meetings.

I know I have had limited knowledge of what is going on, other than having setup a couple of new websites for the club. Which you can find links to on the “Home” page.

After the meeting I took 2 trophies and about 80 beautiful rosette ribbons (from Cat Shows) to Sycamore School so they can repurpose them for the kids. The kindergarten teacher was eager to get them. I’m sure the kids will love receiving them. Didn’t want to throw them out when there is a way to reuse them.

I see that I have only written 2 posts in the past 2 years for this website. As always things have been updated over this time period. But now that I have returned to the meetings, postings should be more frequent.

NOTE: Would be great for some more bio’s from members, so we can all learn a little more about you. You can email me with what you want on your bio and it will go on your designated page… you do have a designated page, all to yourself. I will add photos if provided. Don’t be shy, let the other clubs know who we are. And that we are active and involved.

PS: Leave a comment. Or if you would like some kind words to go on Lion Charlie Duncan’s page email as to what you would like and it will be added.

  • So happy to hear you and Gary have returned to the meetings. Surprised to read Ray Tickner was there. Now if we can get Guy Piche and Ron Mino to attend.

So sad that Charlie Duncan has passed. As we all take the train through life some of our passenger friends have to step off!

    • Yes, we decided to get social again. But it was hard getting up so early. Our usual rise time is 6:30. The cats were wondering what was going on, it didn’t stop them from enjoying their early breakfast.

  • Very sorry to read about Lion Charlie! Time has not been kind to the breakfast lions. Sue and I now live in Auburn,Ca. We now have a daughter and son-in-law, 2 grand daughter’s and twin great grandsons living within 2 square miles. I enjoyed my 17 years as a member of this grey haired club. May you all be as blessed as we have been!!

  • You are so right, Charlie was a very kind and giving man. His caring and kindness was demonstrated when our daughter, Carlie, was fighting cancer. He wanted to make her smile during this fight so he bought her a necklace and earrings and delivered them to our house. He said that Carlie always had a special in his heart for her.

We called Susan a few months ago and talked to her about visiting Charlie but she said that we should remember him as we knew him because he wasn’t the Charlie we knew. He was a true friend and a great Lion 🦁. Rest In Peace Charlie.
