February 2025 The Student Speaker Contest

Student Speaker Contestants
On February 6th we had our annual Student Speaker Contest.
This year the Lions of California are proud to sponsor the
88th annual Student Speakers Contest.
The challenging topic for the 2025 contest was:
“Artificial Intelligence; friend or foe?”
Admiring 3 students from U-Prep School of their poise, ability, and bravery to participate. It takes a lot to accept this challenge for these teenagers. Wow, that was a long time ago for me. No doubt in my mind would I ever have attempted a challenge this daunting at a young age.
They all answered the question and articulated their own thoughts on the subject.
Speaker #1 Rafaela Sodre (in the middle on above photo) a senior
Speaker #2 Jude McAbee (left) a senior
Speaker #3 Ember Braun (right) a freshman and the winner of the contest. She plans of being a lawyer, because she wants to help people. Neither of her parents are lawyers.
Knowing what you want to be when leaving school was not on my radar at 17. Only thing I knew was, I wanted to get a full-time job and leave home. But today kids are encouraged to think about their future, making early plans. Which can give one a head start and direction to work towards with a better chance of succeeding. The opportunities are endless with technology today. Not about physical work as a goal, but intellectual that be achieved without back breaking work.
A great education for kids is important for the continued success of any society. We wish those 3 students much success for their future endeavors in life.

I wish success to Ember Braun. I think it would be cool for her to win this one and next year too! Ember is a freshman!
Yes, she did a great job. And the fact that she said she loved to do speeches. Very confident young lady and at such a young age. We got to remember that name, I’m sure we will hear from her at sometime in the future.
I went to a Lion’s convention and I don’t remember which year. But a young man won the contest. He was a fabulous speaker. His name was Dominic Brock and on his way off the stage he says with arms held up “2036”. I was so impressed with him I had to write his name down.
