Christmas Parties And Memories
Written by Mary Stephenson
Ah, the time of year folks get together. Celebrations with those we know. Grateful for the blessings of having people around us.
Remembering those bygone years. When we were young and filled with such energy and excitement, waiting for St. Nick.
There were plays at school with all kids having to participate for each classes’ performance. I really didn’t like performing and was always grateful they didn’t give me any big parts. Then there were the Sunday School programs. Being involved with them and when I got old enough I did get to play “Mary”.
I liked the singing as a kid… not so much now! A few times we went out caroling, coming from a small place it was fun. Used to go to an old men’s rest home and performed for them. They always looked forward to our visit. The hot chocolate and donuts wasn’t bad afterwards either! (The nurses always invited us back to the kitchen area and rewarded us with a treat.)
On December 16th a few of us showed up for the Sycamore School Christmas Program. Kids were enthusiastic and sang their hearts out to a bunch of Christmas songs. It was fun to watch them. Remembering the old days and what our Christmas Pageants were like, well it wasn’t nearly as entertaining. I suppose it is all what you grew up with that opinions are based.
December 18th we had our Lions Christmas Party. I had a great time. It was nice seeing everyone. The food was delicious. With lots of red clothes and funny Christmas ties added to the delight. I wonder if we should have an ugly Christmas sweater contest next year? That would definitely bring some laughs.
Recalling traditions of childhood. In the month of December my Grandfather used to leave and go to the big city. Which provided us with the use of his TV set. We never had one and getting it for the holidays was delightful. Even with all the snowy pictures in black and white with the lights turned off was fun. In the morning you awoke with blood shot eyes. Wonder why they thought you needed all the lights off to watch TV?
At the end of the year you realize another calendar is needed for the wall. Soon it reminds you of all the calendars you have tossed away. There were memorable holidays and some you can’t recall. Living in a free country gives us the privilege of being able to celebrate how we wish and create those beautiful memories.
Hi Mary,
Great summary of the club activities and spirit of the season.
You need to sing at the club functions for us some time. You “Used to go to an old men’s rest home and performed for them” . It will be like old times with our group and I will bring the cookies.
Have a Merry Christmas.
Ron
Hi Ron
Thank you.
For the singing…that was eons ago when I was in my teens. Cookies or even dark chocolate won’t get me to do that again!
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Mary
