Redding Breakfast Lions Vision Screening Program
♦ School nurses are mandated to screen the vision of all students every
three years from initial enrollment through the 8th grade. Typically,
students are.screened in kindergarten, 2nd, 5th, and 8th grades.
♦ Screenings until recently relied on charts and mechanical devices. The process
was time consuming and the results could be subjective.
♦ The Lions program provides state of the art electronic vision screening
equipment and volunteers to assist the nurses with their screening
schedules. The assistance is furnished at no cost to the school or
parents.
♦ The program is a local Lions District program. The Redding Breakfast Lions
adopted the Program as a dedicated club project.
♦ Use of the spot vision screeners provides objective results that can be
easily and quickly shared with parents and family doctors.
♦ The screeners provide effective results for children through adults. They
are even effective with non-verbal students or those with special needs.
♦ The screeners test for the following conditions:
1. Myopia – nearsightedness
2. Hyperopia – farsightedness
3. Astigmatism – blurred vision
4. Anisometropia – unequal refractive power
5. Strabismus – eye misalignment
6. Anisocoria – unequal refractive power
7. Gaze asymmetry
♦ Tests can be conducted in a fraction of the previous time.
♦ Results of individual deemed to require complete eye exams are transmitted
wirelessly to a printer and a hard copy generated for the nurse.
♦ Typically, 10% of the individuals/students screened require referrals for
complete exams.
♦ During 2017, members of the Redding Breakfast Lions screened over
1700 students in 13 local schools. Students screened ranged from
the Head Start Program to the 8th grade.
♦ Based on the membership’s participation in and support of the program,
the Redding Breakfast Lions Charity’s Board of Directors voted to
purchase a spot vision screener with accessories for the club to use.
