Inspiring Programs for the Community
May 2022
There have been many inspiring speakers at our Thursday morning meetings.
Great job to all those that have reached out to our community and brought them to our club.
Been compiling a stack of information on my desk… meaning to get busy after each meeting to write about it. But alas, other things have seemed to take a priority. So today I decided it is time to at least recognize those that have given their time to inspire our spirits.
Knowing all that Shasta has to offer the community has been eye-opening. I did miss one meeting so unable to comment on that date (5-12).
Disability Action presented by Wendy Longwell. Great program called DAC V.E.S.T. designed for youths with disabilities between 14-24 years. Offering goal setting by Vocational, Educational, Social, and Training. Serving 9 counties. Direct services and resources for persons with disabilities. Serving older people in varying forms. DAC, 2453 Athens Ave., Redding (530-242-8550)
Shining Care presented by Marti Dorman. All about “Aging Well”, for all us older members it seemed something we should put in our thoughts. One day we might need their help or know someone that could use a little help. On the paper it says, “Whether you care for an aging loved one or are an older adult yourself, we promote safety and security, dignity and independence.” Never heard of “The Purple City Alliance of Redding”. It is explained as: “A group of individuals, businesses, organizations and eldercare providers who care about the overall safety, health and wellness of elders, disabled adult, as well as their caregivers.” (530-232-5543)
Senior Safety & Wellness Resource Fair is June 3rd 3-6PM at Redding City Hall
Purple City Festival is June 11th 6-9PM at Sundial Bridge
Damsel in Defense presented by Phyllis Phipps. Lots of ways for women to protect themselves. Not only is this important for women but everyone that is older. Just learning what not to do and to always keep aware of our surroundings, even in the middle of the day. Sometimes we get complacent and forget the criminal is always looking for his next easy target. Things have changed over the years and we all need to be vigilant not only for ourselves but for the most vulnerable in society. (530-604-3876)
Children First Foster Family Agency presented by Robin Freisheim. The stories are sad and it is easy to understand why they can’t break the poverty cycle. Dedicated people with the support of donations can help the homeless children. I never grew up with wealth and fancy clothes. But I always had a bed of my own to sleep in, appropriate clothes for the weather, and plenty of food to eat. It is heartbreaking to hear the obstacles these children have to face. (530-722-1022) Robin has a “bike drive” so those kids that come into foster care can have a bike of their own.
There is a lot of help in this community, but there is still so much more needed.
It all starts with awareness.
Awareness of the problem and awareness of how to help.
