Lions Volunteering

On August 24th Jim, Judy, Gary and I went to Sycamore School to volunteer for their “Back to School Night”.
We were glad it was an indoor affair as it was rather hot outside.
Now that we have done this routine a few times of serving in the kitchen, we took our positions behind the counter and prepared for the influx of families.
This time Susanna (principal of Sycamore) relieved her parents of kitchen duty and put them to work elsewhere. I believe she sent them to translate in some of the classrooms.
We were given some quick instructions and soon we were building tacos for parents and kids.
Very polite bunch of children, the results of what is being taught at Sycamore. They are taught to look you in the eyes and say “yes please” or “no thank you” when asked if they want cheese, etc. Another lesson they are mindful of is when saying “thank you” to say it like you mean it. Good values for young people to know.
Coming up on September 5th is the first of many vision screenings, starting with UPrep. They will all be 8th graders. One good thing about that age…they do know their own name! The little kids sometimes have a hard time conveying to us who they are. With soft spoken voices or completely shy and not even sure of their last name, puts many of us to the challenge. But it is all in good fun. As many of these screenings give us a few good laughs.
Got to admit this summer was a lot less grueling than last year. Many of us spent hours over at Sycamore helping to create the PALZ room. Hours were not wasted as this room is used and appreciated by the school. Knowledge of it is being spread around with in the teaching community, even outside of Shasta County.
Thank you Mary, Gary, Judy and Jim. Looking forward to the screenings, in doors.

It shall be a busy schedule for all of us this fall. But that is what keeps us young!
