On a Blustery Day
Written by Mary Stephenson 5-8-2017
On Sunday, May 7th we all participated in the Big Rummage Sale in Redding. Should have been a simple raise funds and enjoying each other’s company. Which by the way it was!
We started to arrive a bit before 5 AM. It is really dark that time of the morning even with lights on in the parking lot.
By 7 AM we were ready to start selling. Had the tables all full and as the day progressed we moved stuff forward and was able to start eliminating tables.
The winds would gust and did a fine job of keeping us cool.
Although the canopy was tied down with what appeared to be sufficient weight, it became more of a challenge. Many of the group would hang on to the corners trying to keep the canopy from becoming airborne.
Parasailing without the boat was the goal of the canopy! With one last attempt it gave another push upwards just at the time of another sale of an item, which meant someone had to let go of one of the corners. With one last upper thrust it gave one more try.
We ended up with two casualties! Judy and I both got hit on the head. Since I was sitting in the direction it was going (guarding the money) my arm helped to block part of the falling canopy. With 3 lovely bruises and a few red skid marks on my left arm, I think the canopy won!
A lovely lady brought over some ice for our heads. Judy and I shared the bag until the iced melted.
It could have been worse and we are grateful it wasn’t a potential customer that got clobbered.
We cleaned up the area and headed home at the end of the day. Got home and comfortable. Fixed four broken fingernails from the day’s activity.
Decided with the events of the long day and feeling slightly beat up, it was time for a reward. Made a strong cup of coffee, put in some Kahlua, topped with a good helping of whipped cream. Half drank, I really needed to top it off with more whipped cream. Yep, it was an interesting day!

Real good day. Glad you and Judy are ok. Stan
Yes Stan, it was a good day. The breeze was nice but the gusts were unwelcome.

Great fund raiser. Thanks to everyone who helped especially Mary and Judy for “Taking one for the Team”.
Hopefully we can do this again next year.
Ron
The fund raiser next year would be great…but I think I can speak for Judy also, we don’t want to be part of the casualties!
