We Serve

The First Week of June

Doyle Fry our new president for 2019-2020

With the weird weather of the prior weekend we enjoyed the blue sky and no fear of being battered by hailstones.

It began with the Installation Party on June 2nd, for the new club officers, with Doyle Fry taking the leap into leadership. Wishing him all the best for the year ahead.

A fun party, and I think everybody enjoyed the food. Nice to get together with people we haven’t seen in a while. Loved the entertainment, “Off the Charts” did a great job.

We were honored to have Preston Sharp, his mother, and grandmother at our event. History with Preston Sharp goes back to when Jim Reimer first noticed Preston on the news.

When he first came to our club and told us of what he was doing and his “Big Dream”, we had to get our listening ears on to hear him. The next time he came someone hooked him up with a microphone which I guess that gave him a reason to test our hearing again.

Time has passed with many speeches under his belt. He is now taller than his mother and has acquired the charm of a fine young man with confidence.

Below is from his website, which provides us a glimpse in to who Preston is, and if we could just be half as motivated.

On Veterans Day 2015, Preston visited the grave of his grandfather at a Redding cemetery to place a flag and some flowers. The then 10-year-old Preston Sharp noticed the lack of flags or flowers on the graves to honor local veterans. He was so upset that veterans weren’t being honored on Veterans Day.

I  told Preston “You can’t complain about something unless you are willing to fix it”. Preston looked up at me and with a very strong voice said: “I am going to do something about it!”.  https://prestonsharp.net/

Installation of Officers

Ron Mino has been our fearless leader for the past year. There were many challenges for our community during his reign. Hopefully there will be no fires in our near future.

On June 3rd, the award ceremonies at Sycamore School.  Ron, Janet, Gary, and I were present while the kids got their awards. We gave a Good Citizenship Award and Dream Big key chain to 4th grade student Kaylee Yamasaki. On June 6th we gave the same award out to 5th grade student, Katlyn Cook.

June 4th Sycamore School had an Enrichment Day Activities held from 12:30 to 2:30.    We could not be there due to a prior commitment, so not sure how the event went. Charlie Follis told me he thought he was smart by picking a shady area to setup the activity. Soon found they were overwhelmed and had to call in for recruits. The following people helped with the event on the 4th: Jim and Judy, Ron and Janet, Doyle and Brenda, Charlie and Dawn, and Lupe.

As some of you might know, Principal Susanna Winstead is moving to Visalia. She has a new position teaching at another elementary school with a student body of around 750. She jokingly said she would give herself a week to remember all the kid’s names.

The new principal at Sycamore will be Angie Hicks from Sequoia School. I looked on their website, says she is Dean for the school (if everything is up to date?). She is aware of the programs over at Sycamore (the trauma room) and of the Lions being part of the volunteer group.

So things look very promising for us to continue our help with Sycamore. Will arrange a meeting with her after she settles in to the routine of her new adventure at Sycamore.

The PTA is under new leadership and hoping the problems of the past will disappear. Gary and I will attend the PTA meetings earlier this new school season. Had a wonderful conversation with Patti Brent from ESYAC and she will again participate in the PTA, if we do.

Does anyone really know where the camera is?

  • Thank you Mary and Gary,
For all the work you are doing with Sycamore School. Your efforts and the club efforts will help to steer these youngsters toward productive constructive lives. We are going to miss Susanna but wish her all the best at her new home.
    Lion Ron

    • It is nice to see how some of these kids have matured over the years from the beginning of our involvement with Sycamore. Knowing that the PALZ room has made a difference is rewarding. Mary
