Adoption of Sycamore School
The adoption of Sycamore School took place in 2016, after Lion Kurt was invited to be “Principal for a Day” by the principal, Susanna Winstead.
With learning about what was taking place at the school and relaying it back to us, it seemed like a wonderful project to get behind and support.
With a wonderful hard working devoted principal and the support of a program by Olivia LaField which could change lives in such young children, we could see value for the community.
It was not just for the community of Sycamore school children but for all of Redding residents and surrounding areas. When a child is raised in a school environment where they feel safe, respected and cherished they thrive.
When circumstances in a child’s home life is not ideal and school life becomes troubling there can become behavior issues and therefore a lack of learning. Children that can’t cope will have problems that can arise. They can be angry, depressed, cry, act out and many other responses. In typical school situations these kids are labeled and sent off to the doctor to get a prescription.
Prescriptions only calm the child down, they never get to the root of the problem. The child learns that when they are anxious the answer is to medicate and this is not teaching them coping skills. Do we wonder why young people in poor neighborhoods are into drugs, it should be self-proclaiming!
If a child learns to cope a proper way and sees the rewards for doing so, they will learn how to survive and have empathy for others.
Helping these children in Sycamore School grow up with good self-esteem will help all in the community that they end up living in when they have graduated.
If others could adopt a school and work with the programs of “Skills of Independence” constructed by Olivia LaField this can make a huge impact in our communities.

Note: We have decided not to continue with supporting the Santa Shop. Instead we will be focusing on helping more of the kids in need. But will also buy items for the school counselor’s point program. Children will earn points for behavior, homework, reading books, etc. With these points earned they select items of various cash in values. A great learning experience for all children. They will learn to save up to get something of higher value if they desire.
There are many needs at Sycamore School and we are continuing to work with the school counselor to see if we can be more in line with our function as helping children in need. We have taken a new direction for 2024 and trust this will get back to the purpose of our support. As of October 2024 there are 32 bags of food that need to go home on the weekend. We are unable to fulfill that need, so if any group in the community would like to support the effort for Sycamore it would be greatly appreciated. We as a community all win if children have enough to eat.
