We Serve

A New Vision and Volunteers Needed

Written by: Mary Stephenson

On June 8, 2016 Kurt, Gary and I went to Sycamore School for a meeting with principal Susanna Winstead.  She invited Olivia LaField to join us.

We were given a list of the schools needs and they are looking for volunteers.

I was totally blown away with the program Olivia has put into place. “Skills of Independence”  After hearing about it and actually witnessing the difference in the kids at Sycamore, I can only say it is working.

Having been on vision screenings we have had the opportunity to witness a number of schools and how the children react.  Then comparing how Sycamore kids were during our “last day of school” participation with what was expected of them, it explained a lot.  Children were polite, most looked you in the eye and said “thank you” with a smile.  The program works!

We should all care that such programs work and that we as a society do our best to rally around it.  These little ones are tomorrows adults and if they have hope for a better life, we all win!
